FSSAI Explained

What is FSSAI, and what does my business actually need?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the national body that sets food-safety standards and licenses food businesses across India. Almost every hotel, restaurant, caterer, cloud kitchen or food retailer needs some form of FSSAI registration or license to operate legally.

Which one you need depends mostly on the scale of your business, generally grouped into three tiers: a Basic Registration for the smallest operations, a State License for most mid-sized hotels, restaurants and catering businesses, and a Central License for larger, multi-state or high-volume operations. The exact turnover thresholds are set by FSSAI and can be revised, so it's worth confirming your tier directly against the current FSSAI schedule — or asking us, since we track this as part of onboarding every client.
